Description
Zvartnots (Armenian: Զվարթնոց) is a remarkable monument of 7th-century Armenian architecture, whose name translates from Old Armenian as "Temple of the Watchful Angels" (from zvartun, meaning angel). It is located near the cities of Yerevan and Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin). In 2000, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the "Cathedral and Churches of Etchmiadzin and the Archaeological Site of Zvartnots."
The chronicler Sebeos was the first to call the temple "Zvartnots," explaining that it was the place where heavenly warriors (angels) appeared to Saint Gregory the Illuminator. In Armenian tradition, "zvartun" meant "angel," so the temple is often called the "Temple of Angels." Other chroniclers called it the Church of Saint Gregory in Vagharshapat.
The temple attracts not only with its unique architecture and ancient atmosphere, but also with its panoramic view of Mount Ararat, which complements the majestic appearance of this historical monument.
