Description
Zvartnots ("Temple of the Watchful Angels," from the Armenian zvartun, meaning angel) is an outstanding monument of Armenian architecture of the 7th century (640–650 CE), built during the reign of Catholicos Nerses III the Builder. The temple was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 and is considered one of the most ambitious architectural designs of early medieval Armenia. The name reflects its sacred significance: according to legend, angels appeared to St. Gregory the Illuminator at this site, indicating the location for the temple. Today, Zvartnots remains in ruins, with a partially reconstructed first floor. Despite the loss of its colorful decoration, surviving fragments of carvings and polychrome masonry allow us to imagine its former splendor: relief slabs with bunches of grapes and pomegranates; capitals with eagles and crosses; remnants of mosaic panels. The museum exhibits feature original fragments of mosaics and carved details, providing insight into the color palette and skill of the architects.
