Description
Charles Aznavour (Shahnur Vahinak Aznavuryan) 05/22/1924-01.10.2018 - French singer, composer, film actor. From a family of Armenian emigrants who moved from Georgia to France. Educated at the children's theater school. Since childhood, he played the violin, together with his father he sang in a small family restaurant, in 1936 he first played in the movies. At the beginning of his career, he enjoyed the patronage of E. Piaf. Together with the composer and musician P. Roche, who played the piano, he created the creative duet “Roche and Aznavour” and took part in her performances in France and the USA. In the early 50's. was better known as a songwriter and composer. He gained wide popularity in the mid-50s when he began to collect the sold outs of the famous Olympia concert hall in Paris. In the 60s. gained international fame, performed in the USA. His discs began to be sold out all over the world. The author of about 1000 songs. He acted in films, played in more than 60 films. Recognition of his merits was the Grand National Prize of France (1986). He was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (in 2017). He never lost touch with his historical homeland, after the earthquake in Spitak in 1988, he founded the Aznavour for Armenia charity fund, which provided assistance to the victims. In gratitude in 2008, Armenia granted citizenship to Aznavour. In honor of S. Aznavour one of the squares of Yerevan was named.
