Description
Saint Gayane Church (Armenian: Սուրբ Գայանե եկեղեցի) is an ancient Armenian church dating back to the 7th century, located in the city of Vagharshapat, Armenia. It is part of the Etchmiadzin Monastery complex. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
Spiritual Center: A place of pilgrimage to the relics of Saint Gayane; believers pray for steadfastness in faith and protection from temptation.
Historical Memory: A symbol of the martyrdom of the first Christian women preachers in Armenia and the establishment of Christianity as the state religion (301).
Architectural Icon: One of the first examples of the use of domed pillars in Armenian architecture, influencing subsequent buildings (Mren and Odzun Cathedrals).
